Valemount for the Free Spirited Adventurer
Shout your name from the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, fly through the Class V rapids on the Beaver River in spring, or tear through metres of fresh powder from the saddle of a snowmobile. For you, vacations are for experiencing everything this wonderful country has to offer. Vacations are for winding up, not winding down. Thankfully, you’ve come to the right place. You can always rest while you’re at home — until then, plan on wringing the most of this life and sucking back all the adventure you can.
For centuries, explorers have come to these mountains and have been thrilled by the wild, untamed wilderness and glacial peaks. Those adventurers have long looked up and wondered just how far they could climb. Now it’s possible to reach for unimaginable heights. Soar through the air in a helicopter and land high above the rest of the world, and know upon landing that this is the good life. These are the moments only available to the truly blessed, and that the ride back down that mountain will be one for the memory books.
Let our mountains move you and let your adventure begin. When the day is done find respite at spectacular mountain retreats. Indulge in gourmet food — why not try an elk steak while you’re here? Sample the delights of Valemount’s own microbrewery and record every moment of your adventure from a helmet-mounted GoPro, or from the waterproof camera you’ll bring with you on your white-water adventure.
White-water Rafting has been compared to riding a roller coaster, but that doesn’t do it justice. Out here, the track is the river, the turns and dips are not engineered, but laid down by Mother Nature who strategically placed these boulders in your path. High five strangers after completing a circuit of insane rapids — everything from easy Class I to wild Class III — then take a deep breath and get ready for more. For even bigger thrills give the Beaver River a go. The Beaver offers the only Class IV rapids in the region which means those rapids are big, they’re gnarly, they’re technical and they’re fast. With more than 7 named rapids on this run, it is considered a must-ride for adrenaline seekers who can choose to navigate Beaver Falls before coming to a rest.
The Funky Goat is a true original, and so are you. Burgers slathered liberally with vodka mayo and eaten in the majesty of the mountain ranges of Valemount — sounds amazing doesn’t it? Feast on succulent meals made within the confines of this famous, bright green mobile food truck.
The North West Mud Races are loud, messy and so much fun you won’t even notice how dirty you get. Every August machines and their drivers from throughout the BC Interior and beyond start rumbling into the Rodeo Grounds at the Canoe River Campground for a weekend of mayhem. Bring your earplugs and get in on the fun!
Master the ski hill, conquer the Snowcat; to get any higher you have to grow wings and fly. Heli-skiing lets you do just that. The view from the top is one few get to witness and it’s worth every penny. This is where we reach impossible heights and access unbelievable powder. Heli-skiing in the Canadian Rockies is an adventure of a lifetime. Long, steep tree runs, classic glades, wide bowls filled with powder — seven metres on average — this is the kind of skiing Warren Miller made famous, and now you get to experience it in real time.
Ever hear of powerboarding? Valemount is home to the world’s only sled-assisted ski hill, Crystal Ridge, where you can race to the top of the mountain with your skis strapped to your sled and launch yourself back down through some of the best powder in the country. Created and managed by VARDA, Crystal Ridge opened for the 2013/14 season and has six runs, each with a vertical drop of approximately 670 metres.
