Experience horseback riding the old west way in Valemount, BC. Join a guided tour, or saddle up to explore on your own on our endless mountain trails.
Oh the places you’ll go
Saddle up and climb on. This is the real wild west, meant to be seen from high atop your faithful steed. Bring your own horse or book a tour with a local trail guide and head out for a day exploring the valleys and gentle slopes of Valemount.
Put your foot in the stirrup and throw your leg over; now steady the reins and look up. This is where novels are written and this is where memories are made. In the Valley of the Mountains we hike, we bike, we fish and we paddle, but some argue the best way to get around in our natural wilderness is with the help of an equine companion.
Explore on Your Own or Take a Guided Tour
If the saddle is your second home, feel free to bring your own mount to our valley and explore our vast and varied trail networks, or board at a local ranch and register in any number of horsemanship training camps and clinics. If horseback riding is something you’ve always wanted to do and have never had the opportunity, you’ve come to the right place. Book a guided tour, spend an afternoon or camp out overnight. While you’re in Valemount, let the mountains move you — but let the horse you’re riding take your breath away.
Simple stomping ground
Hearken back to those early days, when the Robson Valley was a thriving hub for fur traders, prospectors, miners and loggers and horses were both a luxury and a necessity. See the world as these pioneers saw it — from a quiet perch on an able steed. Book with a local tour operator and spend a few hours on the trail, or camp out overnight beside a quickly moving creek. Ascend gradual heights and wander through wildflower dotted meadows. At times, the forest will wrap itself around you, then it will disappear, and you’ll find yourself trotting through open fields with the jagged mountain peaks of the Rockies, Monashees and Cariboo Mountains standing guard at each side.
Back at the ranch
Wide open spaces — that’s all a cowboy or girl really wants, and it is exactly what Valemount provides. The Robson Valley has a long tradition of producing some of the finest horses in the Interior of British Columbia from its numerous working ranches. Bring your own horse or lease one from a local operator, and enrol in any number of clinics and multi-day workshops. Perfect the techniques necessary for effective ranch work, or simply use the time as a way to create a new level of understanding between yourself and your equine partner. Western or dressage, the Robson Valley is filled with opportunities to improve your horsemanship.
Boots and chaps and cowboy hats
Maybe you’ve seen them on television or maybe you’ve even been once or twice. We call it a Rodeo — the Canoe Mountain Rodeo, to be exact — and it draws in cowboys and girls from throughout the Robson Valley and beyond. Every July our rodeo grounds heat up and the valley fills with excitement. We’ve got barrels and bull riding, bareback broncs and more. Dust off your boots, come on in and help cheer on the competitors as they vie for top spot. Stay late and kick up your heels at our legendary rodeo dance and make it a night to remember.
