Outdoor skating in Valemount is the perfect way to spend a day with friends and make some new ones.
Slice through the ice
Take a deep breath of that cool, crisp, mountain air and drink in this truly Canadian experience — open air ice-skating. With the blue skies above and the groomed surface of Cranberry Marsh below, pond skating is something we love to do in Valemount, and it’s even more fun when visitors get involved.
Grab a stick, make a team and start a good old-fashioned game of pond hockey. Pack a lunch and a Thermos full of coffee or hot chocolate and relax between periods. Get to know your team and hassle your competition — this is Canada’s sport after all.
If your pace runs a little slower, take a spin on the oval. Show off a bit, carve a figure eight and try a jump or two for the delight of the kids. Or, press on and wind your way through the channels of the marsh. In summer, the channels of the Starratt Wildlife Sanctuary come alive and make for a romantic meandering canoe trip. In winter the route becomes even more romantic with the quiet calm and serenity offered by the snow capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains above. Hold hands, sink into the moment and feel that connection to this place and to one another.
